Bio Cranial Therapy

Bio Cranial Therapy is a system of treating the body via the bones in the head. Your skull consists of 24 moveable bones that expand and contract 8-12 times a minute. This motion is what helps move the cerebral spinal fluid around the brain, down to the sacrum and back up to the brain again. This fluid is channeled through a strong fibrous tissue called the meninges. The meninges attach to the brain and spinal column and protect the spinal cord. Any reduction in motion of the cranium affects the motion of the dura that then effects the spinal cord and nerves that exit the spinal cord. Since some of these nerves are also part of the Autonomic Nervous system, this torque can have an effect on the organs as well. The Autonomic Nervous System is divided into the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic systems.

The Sympathetic Nervous System is your fight or flight reaction to stress. It stimulates blood flow to the muscles and away from your digestive system. It increases sweat production, breathing rate and dilates the eyes. It tells the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline and it makes the heart pump harder to get the blood to the muscles faster. These nerves exit the spinal cord in from the upper back down to the low back.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System has to do with glandular secretions and digestion. It contracts the bladder, digests your food and moves your bowels. It directs the blood flow to the organs so they can function properly. These nerves are found in the cranium and the sacral area. Any twisting in the meninges caused by the cranium fixation will effect the function of these nerves and the spinal nerves. The result can be sciatic pain, pinched nerves in the neck and back and organ dysfunction.

This enclosed system formed by the meninges being attached to the cranium, spine and sacrum is called the reciprocal tension membrane system. This is how the fixations or misalignments in the head can effect all the other parts of the body. Chiropractors for years said that the skull sits on top of the spine and as the spine goes the skull will follow. It was the Osteopaths that figured out that the spine hangs from the skull and as the cranium shifts the spine will follow. Any recurring spinal or organ problems may have their roots in the restricted cranium. Our goal in BCT is to restore as much cranial motion as possible, which will unwind the meninges and restore the normal function to the spine and organs.

Laterality of disease is explained now with an understanding of cranial restrictions. If you have all of your problems on one side of your body then you have a cranial lesion on that side. You can be a predominately right or left side lesion and below is the list of symptoms that go with each:

Left side cranial distortions:
Angina, coronary disorders, hiatus hernia, gastritis, gastric ulcers, all-gone empty feeling after eating, colitis, simple anemia, pernicious anemia, hyperthyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, menopausal symptoms including flashing, diabetes mellitus, nervous collapse/breakdown, ongoing anxiety, palpitations, alcoholism.

Right side cranial distortions:
Appendicitis, duodenal ulcer, constipation, ileo-caecal valve syndrome, nausea, gall bladder disease, travel sickness, hepatitis, abdominal bloating/distention associated with eating, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), migraine headaches accompanied by sickness/vomiting, depression of unknown origin (tentative).

To correct these distortions takes time but not as much as you might think. Usual treatment schedules are about 12-18 visits spread over a 2-6 month period. The older your body is or the longer it takes to make these changes and the overall correction may be less than 100%. Also, if you have experienced head trauma, surgery or automobile accidents, you may take longer to achieve maximum correction. Anatomical dissections of the spine reveal that the meninges become adhered and fused to the spine at the levels of spinal degeneration. To free that up and get the tissues to heal will take some time and they may not fully regenerate. But there is no other therapy that will even come close to making the changes BCT can make in a spine that damaged. You will likely experience a retracing effect which means that at times you will feel worse but that will pass.

You will eventually feel a new energy and regeneration in your body. Old problems will disappear and a new stability to your body will appear. Most of our patients look younger after they have been through the program. Their face is more balanced and looks less stressed due to the release of the stress on the meninges. Your organs will tend to work better and your digestion may improve markedly. Eyesight may improve as well as other sense organs. The effects of BCT are found in the entire body and not just in the neck or back.
