April showers bring May…Snow!  But the next day brings the sun and the warm so I’m not snowed off the golf course for more than a day or two.  Hope you are enjoying our spring!

Hormones

So, what is a hormone?  It is a single agent that effects many systems.  For instance, thyroid hormone and insulin effect virtually every cell in your body. That’s what makes hormones so powerful and so dangerous to mess with. Hormones are many times more powerful than any diet you could try to change your body’s weight up or down.

Last month I started talking about the endocrine system and the main concerns that must be addressed to help balance someone’s hormones:
There are 4 main areas that must be addressed to balance someone’s endocrine system:

  1. Support and stabilize blood glucose.
  2. Balance essential fatty acids (Omega 3 & 6)
  3. Support liver biotransformation (the ability to detox the chemicals and poisons in our environment)
  4. Normalize gut function and flora. (infections, good bacteria, more fermented foods, clean diet, etc.)

I gave you an assignment to work on stabilizing your blood sugar by eating more often if you get hypoglycemic symptoms or eating slower and less food at one time if you were getting tired after eating.  This helps prevent insulin surges.

Insulin

Insulin is produced by the pancreas in response to a rising level of sugar in your blood.  It helps move the sugar out of the blood and into the cells.  If you eat a lot of sugar, then you get a large spike in insulin trying to compensate for the increase level of sugar in the blood.  Conversely, if you haven’t eaten for a while and your blood sugar is getting low, your body will release insulin to try and bring whatever sugar it can find into the cells. 

Lifestyle Causes

Lack of physical activity, overeating, high sugar and high starch snacks/meals, social and pleasure eating plus a lack of fiber in the diet create insulin resistance.  This creates fatigue, inability to lose weight, joint pain, depression, mood disorder, infertility, thinning hair and hormone imbalances.
Missing meals, avoiding snacks, high sugar snacks, using caffeine or nicotine to suppress appetite, eating sweets instead of a meal, long gap of fasting between dinner and first meal the next day, lack of protein or fiber in the diet, overtraining without replenishing glucose are the habits that lead to hypoglycemia. This creates fatigue, insomnia, depression, mood disorders, infertility, slow metabolism, difficulty losing weight, headaches and hormone imbalances.

All the bio-identical hormones in the world is not going to fix the hormone imbalance caused by the above lifestyles. 

Insulin Surges

  1. It increases testosterone in women and estrogen in men.  This is one of the main causes of hair loss in women. 
  2. High insulin will make your cell’s receptors change so that more insulin is now needed to allow sugar to pass into the cell. 
  3. Insulin surges increase blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels.  Also increases inflammation in the body.
  4. Insulin surges create leptin resistance.  This is a hormone found in your fat cells that helps regulate appetite. Higher levels of leptin lead to increased appetite.
  5. Insulin surges increase your cortisol output.  Increased cortisol creates:
    1. Anterior pituitary suppression of LH and TSH.  This creates problems with testosterone production in men, altered menstrual cycles in women and low thyroid function for both.
    2. Liver detoxification overload.
    3. Hippocampal destruction-loss of short-term memory.
    4. Thyroid resistance.  Thyroid hormone receptors need a lot more thyroid hormone to make them work.
    5. Under-conversion of the inactive thyroid hormone T4 into the active thyroid hormone T3.
    6. Loss of immune barriers in the intestines which develops leaky gut problems, food intolerance, infections, etc.

So, by controlling your insulin surges with a change in diet and lifestyle, you can do a lot to help your health, hormones and endocrine system!  Again, most of the above information was derived from Dr. Datis Kharrazian’s writings and courses.
