Dr. Reese’s Bits and Pieces
September 2017 Newsletter

This month is the official end of summer but the beginning of a great long Colorado fall.  The leaves changing, cool nights and warm days are great but I wish the days weren’t getting shorter.  I can’t believe there is Halloween decorations in the stores already!

Turn off the Noise
Since the November elections, the rhetoric, screaming, accusations, lies, half-truths, etc., on both sides is creating severe physical and mental stress on all sides.  This is mostly bombast and show but it creates high blood pressure, anxiety, depression and fear in a lot of people.  Every day is a different threat, revelation, accusation, possible crime and then it’s gone with the next set of headlines.  It is not healthy for human consumption!  I recommend a news-ectomy for you if you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed-out.

After the 2010 elections, I disconnected my cable and went cold turkey from the nightly news to distance myself from all the manufactured chaos.  I had given up reading newspapers 20-30 years before for the same reason.  There are plenty of good shows and movies you can watch on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc., without ever having to turn on the local news.  Don’t worry that you will miss some earth shattering event.  Every time you log on to your email provider or turn on the car radio, you will get your instant dose of hysteria passing as news.

Besides, if the world does blow up or the sun flames out, you’ll know pretty quickly.  I didn’t need a news report to tell me I was in the middle of an earthquake early one morning near Northridge, California in 1994.  The bed moving back and forth across the floor was all the hint I needed.

What the Health
Since I look to Netflix for some of my entertainment, I ran across this “documentary” film called What the Health a few weeks ago.  Since I’m into health I decided to watch it.  I was very surprised shortly into the movie when they informed me that diabetes was not caused by sugar.  Nope, meat and fat caused that and sugar can never turn into fat… plus only fat makes you fat.  I thought I was in a time warp and the clock had rolled back to the early 70’s.  Having treated patients with diabetes for over 30 years and see their health and blood markers improve by avoiding sugar and eating more fat, I knew what they were saying was false.

Come to find out it was really a movie promoting veganism as the only proper healthy diet for everyone.  Now it made sense.  This was more propaganda than science.

They did raise some good points about the problems of the commercial meat industry, the hypocrisy of many health oriented charities and groups.  Government collusion with food industry, etc.  None of that was new information.  We all know that humanely raised animals are healthier than the ones who never see the light of day and are injected with tons of antibiotics and hormones.

One Size Does Not Fit All
As I’ve written many times in the past, I have found clinically that the 3 metabolic types (not blood type diet) described in Wolcott’s book, The Metabolic Typing Diet, is the best answer as to what diet is right for you. There are 3 metabolic types: protein, carb and mixed.  Approximately, 1/3 of the population fits into each category.  If you eat right for your metabolic type, you will be healthy and lean.  If you eat based on some philosophy, fade, whim or latest craze, you may damage your health instead.  A protein type eating a vegan diet will lose muscle, gain fat and get sick.  Just as a carb type eating an Adkins, Paleo or Ketogenic type diet would get sick.  To find your metabolic type you can take the free test in the book or at: http://uprightmovement.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/The_Metabolic_Type_Self_Test.pdf

Dr. Weston Price studied many primitive tribes in the early 20th century and found great diversity in diets across the world.  If the people stuck to their traditional diet, they lived long healthy lives and heart disease, cancer and tooth decay were mostly unheard of.  The one thing he never found was a group who ate a purely vegan diet:

To begin with, in his journeys, Dr Price never once found a totally vegetarian culture. It should be remembered that Dr. Price visited and investigated several population groups who were, for all intents and purposes, the 20th century equivalents of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Dr. Price was on the lookout for a vegetarian culture, but he came up empty. Price stated: As yet I have not found a single group of primitive racial stock which was building and maintaining excellent bodies by living entirely on plant foods.  (https://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/vegetarianism-and-plant-foods/myths-of-vegetarianism)

The above article goes over 15 myths of vegetarianism and is a good read if the What the Health movie has left you dazed and confused.  The Weston A Price group has lots of good info on their site about traditional diets and Dr. Price’s research.

Office News
Both Sarah and I will be gone for at least a week in the middle of the month.  I’m heading to Ireland and Scotland from the 12th- 23rd and will be back in the office on the 25th.  Might golf once but it’s mostly a sightseeing trip.  Sarah will be off on her own vacation the week of the 18th-22 and back in the office on the 25th as well.

No one will be in the office on Monday September 18th.  Someone will be checking messages and will be in the office Tuesday through Friday to help you with supplements or get you scheduled for when we return.  Be sure to call ahead to make sure someone will be available if you need to stop by the office.  Yes, we will also be closed for Labor Day on September 4th.  Have a great end of summer holiday!
