Dr. Reese’s Bits and Pieces
November 2020 Newsletter

Hope you’ve gotten your smoke quota to last you a lifetime! I was even glad to not be able to golf due to the snowstorm.  All of that air pollution has put a lot of chemicals and mold in the lungs of most of the patients we’ve treated in the past month.  Keep taking your minerals and multivitamins to help pull those chemicals out of your body.  If you aren’t feeling that great, get in so we can figure out what you need to feel better!

This is the beginning of what I call “The Season of Eating”.  Normally, from Halloween thru the Super Bowl, we tend to eat a lot of party, restaurant and catered food plus travel is very common.  This tends to make us more susceptible to getting parasites.  This season might be different with the Covid scare.  During the early lockdown, most of you didn’t travel or eat restaurant food and we saw you getting healthier.  It is one of the few benefits I’ve seen from the restrictions.

If you do travel or eat food prepared by someone other than your family, I recommend you take one GI Synergy pack that day to protect you from food-borne infections.  If you are lucky enough to travel outside of the US or eat raw fish, take two packs per day.  It’s easier to stop the infections before they start then it is to treat them after they develop.  Also, the less sugar you eat, the less your immune system gets suppressed. I will be working this month on getting my drreese.blog started and post my granddaughter Avery Mae’s picture.  She was born on 9/9/20 and is healthy and happy!  -CR

Dr. Gruhl’s Healthy Rules

“There is but one solution to the intricate riddle of life; to improve ourselves,
and to contribute to the happiness of others.” ~Mary Shelley

By the time you read this, election day will be a thing of the past and change, once again, will be rippling through our lives. Every election year I remind myself that we, as brothers and sisters all over the country (and all over the world) have much more in common than we do that separate us. Despite what we might hear from politicians and the media, there is no “us” and “them”. We have different backgrounds, languages, cultures, and viewpoints. But we are all literally made of the same star dust, the same molecules and the same atoms. We get one chance on this tiny blue planet together, and we all return to the great unknown upon our death. The question is, what are we going to focus on while we are alive? I choose to focus on my greatest joy: helping other people realize TRUE health, and to feel as amazing as possible in these bodies we were gifted.

Important NEW Research You Need to Know:
Dr. Reese and I have been harping on the importance of Vitamin D for, well, decades. Now we have current data regarding its effect not just on general immune health, but specifically for COVID-19:

Szabo, Z et al. (2020) The Potential Beneficial Effect of EPA and DHA Supplementation Managing Cytokine Storm in Coronavirus Disease. Frontiers in Physiology 11: Article 752
“Based on the available data, the supplementation of EPA and DHA in COVID-19 patients appears to have potential beneficial effect in managing the “cytokine storm”. Therefore, the use of EPA and DHA supplementation should be considered as both a supportive therapy and a prevention strategy in SARS-Cov-2 infection.”

Grant et al. (April 2020) Evidence that Vitamin D Supplementation Could Reduce Risk of Influenza and COVID-19 Infections and Deaths Nutrients 12, 988; doi:10.3390/nu12040988
“To reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended that people at risk of influenza and/or COVID-19 consider taking 10,000 IU/d of vitamin D3 for a few weeks to rapidly raise 25(OH)D concentrations, followed by 5000 IU/d.” Based on the above, and the enormous amount of evidence from the peer-reviewed literature it is clear that sufficient levels of Omega fatty acids EPA & DHA (from fish oils), along with Vitamin D are essential for normal/optimal immune function, especially immune defense against Influenza (flu), Rhino (cold), and Corona (covid) viruses.  (James Chestnut, MS, DC, BSc)

àThe single greatest determinant of whether an individual becomes infected with coronavirus and A. feels nothing at all, B. develops some type of symptoms, or C. dies, is their BASELINE HEALTH STATUS. These studies show that supplementing with Omega fatty acids and Vitamin D can minimize the severity & duration of infectionand may prevent serious complications & death. We’ve known this to be true for common cold viruses and seasonal respiratory diseases like flu. Now we have data showing it to be the same for COVID-19.

Stay warm, stay healthy, and have a fantastic Thanksgiving! Remember, a hug a day has been linked with less incidence & severity of both colds & flu, so be sure to love on your favorite people over the holidays. Psychol Sci. 2015 Feb; 26(2): 135–147.See you in the clinic!  -Jared
